From Pre-Fab to Pop-Ups?

The New York Times reports on how the economy has shifted the focus of some modular designers away from home manufacturing toward retail. In particular, the team behind the low-impact ItHouse (Taalman-Koch Architecture) has started providing Los Angeles-area malls with smaller versions of living spaces termed as "pop-ups." Is the increased attention a good thing, or does it take away from the gains made in alternative and sustainable living spaces?
